Last week on Wednesday November 22, 2017, I had the great opportunity to shadow my mentor, Barbara Beachamp. Barbara is the director of Palm Village Senior Network, a community benefit organization dedicated to supporting seniors into socializing, skill-sharing, moral support, learning, and having fun. I arrived right on time for an activity called “Train Brain” in which Barbara works on some problem solving worksheets with the seniors whom attend. These worksheets get your brain really working and I even found myself struggling to complete them. but overall it was great seeing Barbara interact with the attendees. For this activity I got to meet two lovely ladies, who are also part of the organizations developing board. Once the activity was over about an hour later, I observed how Barbara went about her day at her office. It was very humbling to see how she does most of her work on her own, such as create, print, put together, and mail out her monthly newsletters. All this was done by hand and I believe this proves her great dedication. I also got to meet Barbara’s intern, a business-marketing student from Fresno Pacific University. He was very welcoming and willing to show me what he had been working on while interning for PVSN. His business background and willlingingness to work with a community benefit organization reminded me a lot about myself since I was a business student before being introduced to Humanics. As the day went on, the next activity I observed the seniors participate in was a game of Canasta. During this game I got to meet two more lovely ladies that joined the rest of us. I was humbled to witness these ladies enjoy one another’s company and it proved to me that Barbara and her organization are really making a great difference in the life of many. I only hope that I can one day make as much of a great difference as she has.¬†Pictured: Carol, Lilah, Brenda, Barbara, and Marni.
