Below is a statement from Reverend Sofia Betancourt of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno. She is part of the organization “Faith In Community.”

You are welcome to join other members of the Fresno community on Tuesday evening at 6 pm at Eaton Plaza.

When: 6:00pm on Tuesday, November 25, 2014

Where: Eaton Plaza, 2400 Fresno St., 93721 (Mariposa and N St.)

The outcomes of federal and state investigations into the death of Michael Brown call us to express our moral outrage as one interfaith community. Together we raise our voices in the face of this national travesty to call for justice; to insist on the value of all human life; and to ask our communities of faith, hope, and love to respond with calm, peaceful witness. Now is the time for us to join the national conversation to promote racial justice in the United States. Now is the time for us to invest in the very soul of our nation.

Our traditions call us into covenant with true justice – a higher standard of justice than what society provides. We are the inheritors of a legal system that denies real justice to many. If true justice is the goal, then the law itself must be just. If we are called to building the beloved community that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached about, then every one of us is needed to make lasting change. Recent events in Ferguson, MO shine a spotlight on the disastrous consequences of prejudice and fear in our nation. As people of faith we insist that all lives matter. Black and brown lives matter. The hearts, souls, and spirits of all those impacted by racial violence in America matter – and that means that every one of us matters.

Please join us. We invite you to come in peaceful witness, and in solidarity with the people of Ferguson. Come together as one Fresno community committed to a true justice. Come together to grieve and to pray for all those in harm’s way.
