I really enjoyed our visit to Neighborhood Thrift. I thought the speakers were very open to telling us about their experience starting a CBO. Neighborhood Thrift really embodies what this class is about. They have created a business that is both successful and serves the community. They said that the most important part of starting Neighborhood Thrift, or any CBO, is developing a mission statement. Developing a mission statement involves reflecting seriously on the identity of the organization and its purpose. This was something that I think I will stick with me from the experience. It was interesting hearing them talk about their board and what they are doing to develop it. One of the main focuses of my group will be the board of the organization we are working with, so it was helpful to hear about it from a blossoming organization.
